As part of a broader effort to provide clients with multiple ways to access its investment expertise, American Century Investments recently launched separately managed accounts (SMAs).
The products are particularly important to financial advisors and their clients located in the United States, according to Sr. Vice President & Global Head of Products Glen Casey. "However, while our initial focus of SMA model delivery is the U.S., we're seeing demand for this format from various client groups around the globe."
SMAs are portfolios of individual securities managed on behalf of a client by a professional asset management firm. The end user owns the individual securities, which can offer control, customization and transparency. In addition to being managed by investment professionals, SMAs allow investors holding individual securities the flexibility to implement account-specific, tax-efficient strategies. Underlying holdings can be excluded at the client's request to address specific needs such as social responsibility or diversification. Also, investors receive robust access to holdings and transactions history to help them effectively monitor performance.
American Century Investments has been incubating four model portfolios as part of its initial market entry plan, but the firm expects to expand the offering over time. The portfolios generally each contain around 40—60 stocks and will be delivered as a model portfolio to be implemented by the SMA sponsor firm.
Following are details on the model portfolios. Two of the portfolios—Focused Dynamic Growth SMA and Large Cap Value SMA—are currently available. The other two—Sustainable Equity SMA and Non-U.S. Concentrated Growth SMA—will be available next month.
